I was going for the classic holy grail icon to symbolize the desert as a paradise and a spiritual place. Just weeks before this trip, I saw a UC Santa Cruz student interviewed on the local news concerning toxic waste dumping in the nearby redwoods. He said angrily, “Why can’t they just dump it in the desert where there’s nothing.”
