The Big Sur River empties into the Pacific just out of frame to the right. To get to and from the beach, you must paddle across the river. On this peaceful fall morning, the surf was breaking hard behind the still river. Like otters floating in kelp or pelicans diving for food, I see surfers as another form of native wildlife indigenous to the California coast.
